Google’s Cookie U-Turn: What It Means for Your Marketing Strategy

Google U Turn

Update Nov. 26, 2024: Google updated its approach to third-party cookies with a new tool in beta. While the original post is still valuable, we have updated it with the following information:

Google has introduced Customer Match in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) as part of an open beta. This feature aims to maximize coverage for remarketing efforts by increasing addressable audiences exported to linked Google advertising products, especially when third-party cookies are unavailable.

Customer Match allows you to use first-party customer data, such as email addresses or phone numbers, collected through user-provided data collection. This data is hashed and sent to Google to supplement Analytics audiences. The feature works seamlessly with existing Google Ads campaigns using Smart Bidding and optimized targeting, automatically including Customer Match lists to enhance ad performance.

Products in beta are subject to change. In the meantime, Customer Match can help you build deeper relationships with customers, scale your audience strategy, and leverage an important signal for Smart Bidding and optimized targeting. All the while, you will be future-proofing your setup in a world moving away from third-party cookies.

In July 2024, Google reversed its decision to phase out third-party cookies in Chrome. Privacy advocates and ad industry professionals are criticizing this change in direction after having adapted their systems to accommodate the change.

Third-party cookies are small pieces of data stored on a user’s device by a website that is different from the one the user is currently visiting. These cookies are often set by advertisers or other external services to track users across multiple sites, enabling targeted advertising and personalized content.

Since Google’s announcement, there has not been much information on how advertisers are adapting. However, the key to success is continuous adaptation and innovation. In today’s environment, it is crucial not to rely on thirdparty cookie tracking. Google’s decision to extend the use of cookies may seem like a return to “business as usual,” but the push for enhanced online privacy is far from over.

In the United States, Canada, and Europe, privacy regulations are empowering consumers with the legal right to opt out of having their personal data used for targeted advertising. This ongoing shift underscores the need for advertisers to adapt their strategies in a landscape where privacy concerns are increasingly at the forefront. TruStar has extensive knowledge in online privacy work having developed multiple plans for our healthcare clients where this issue is a top priority.

How Google’s Decision Impacts Your Marketing Strategy

Google’s decision to delay the phasing out of third-party cookies has mixed implications. For some, it is a relief—a temporary reprieve that allows more time to transition to privacy-focused strategies. For others, it’s a setback in the quest for greater online privacy. Soon, for business and regulatory reasons, third-party cookies will leave Chrome.

How prepared is your business for a “cookieless” future?

Power Up Your Marketing with Owned Channels & Data

One important way to mitigate cookie deprecation is to use your owned marketing channels and data as much as possible. This means looking at blog posts, social media, an email newsletter, and the content on your website. Owned media does not require the same kind of budget as paid media spend, and businesses have complete control over brand messaging, content, and presentation.

Owning your marketing channels also means you will respond directly to inquiries and concerns in real-time. Do this consistently, and you will build loyalty and increase your opportunities to cultivate advocacy. A company that regularly updates its blog with industry insights and promptly responds to comments helps establish itself as a trusted authority.

Amplify Your Reach with Earned Media Magic

Earned media includes social media shares and mentions, reposts, reviews, and recommendations of your business or products.

  • It helps your business achieve higher rankings on search engine results pages, enhancing your online visibility.
  • It provides audiences with “social proof,” showcasing the value of your products or services through third-party endorsements. This, in turn, builds trust and legitimacy in the eyes of potential customers; for example, a positive review from a well-known industry influencer can significantly boost your brand’s credibility.

  • It contributes to growing your brand’s reach and authority, amplifying your presence and influence in the market.

Rethink Paid Media: Maximize ROI in a Changing Landscape

Paid media reaches customers right at the time they are ready to buy. However, consider strategies that rely less on retargeting as you move away from reliance on third-party cookies.

Paid social is also an effective tool for increasing followers and engagement. Additionally, it is an effective tool to promote owned content to more targeted audiences.

Mix and Match: Diversify Your Content Strategy

Boost the visibility and reach of your owned content by sharing it across multiple channels. For instance, consider syndicating your content through earned media opportunities such as guest blogging, contributed articles, and media partnerships. A diversified approach ensures that your message reaches a broader audience while reinforcing your brand’s presence across multiple platforms.

Ready to Future-Proof Your Marketing?

So, while much of the digital ad industry felt relieved at Google’s decision in July, wise marketers are investing in alternate strategies like the ones mentioned above. With privacy concerns being at the forefront for users in Europe, Canada, and domestically, it is just a matter of time before the technology is no longer available.
